Where to stay in the Algarve with a rental car The short answer: west, centre or east? Stay in Lagos if your plan is Benagil, Ponta da Piedade and Cabo de São Vicente with a rental car. From Lagos, Ponta da Piedade is 15 min away, Benagil 45 min, Cabo de São Vicente 1 h and Faro airport 1 h 10, so no single leg of that list is longer than 1 h 10. Stay in the centre, in Armação de Pêra or Albufeira, if you want Faro airport at 45 min and Benagil at 20 to 35 min. Stay in the east (Faro, Olhão, Tavira) if you want a calmer trip and a short airport transfer, and you accept 1 h 20 to 1 h 30 to Ponta da Piedade; Seville is under two hours from Tavira. No base keeps every famous spot within an easy drive, but the A22 has been toll-free since 1 January 2025, so a longer transfer now costs you minutes rather than tolls. Pick the base that suits the days you will actually spend, then rent a car for the rest. Base-picker table: minutes to the places people drive to Read the two decisive columns first: Faro airport and Benagil, side by side. A base that is quick to both (Armação de Pêra, Albufeira) is far from Sagres. A base that is quick to Sagres and Ponta da Piedade (Lagos, Sagres) is further from the airport. Base — Zone — Best for — Faro airport — Benagil — Ponta da Piedade — Cabo de São Vicente — Monchique — Silves — Seville — Parking reality — Winter Sagres — West — Wind, rugged cliffs, surf — 1 h 45 — 1 h 20 — 55 min — 10 min — 1 h 30 — 1 h 15 — 3 h 20 — Ask: reserved, shared or charged? — Very quiet Lagos — West — First-timers, evenings on foot — 1 h 10 — 45 min — 15 min — 1 h — 55 min — 40 min — 2 h 45 — Do not drive into the old town; two covered municipal car parks plus paid on-street zones — No corroborated rating Praia da Luz — West — Compact family resort — 1 h 15 — 50 min — 25 min — 55 min — 55 min — 45 min — 2 h 50 — Ask: reserved, shared or charged? — Quiet Alvor — Centre — Long beach and lagoon, former fishing village — 1 h — 35 min — 45 min — 1 h 20 — 40 min — 30 min — 2 h 35 — Ask: reserved, shared or charged? — Seasonal, quiet Praia da Rocha — Centre — Beach-resort district next to Portimão — 1 h 05 — 35 min — 55 min — 1 h 30 — 50 min — 35 min — 2 h 45 — Ask: reserved, shared or charged? — Portimão town stays open year-round Ferragudo — Centre — Small fishing village — 1 h — 25 min — 55 min — 1 h 30 — 45 min — 30 min — 2 h 35 — Ask: reserved, shared or charged? — Quiet Carvoeiro — Centre — Cliffside cove resort near Benagil — 55 min — 10 min — 55 min — 1 h 25 — 45 min — 25 min — 2 h 30 — Ask: reserved, shared or charged? — Quiet, many seasonal closures November to March Armação de Pêra — Centre — Central beach base for airport plus Benagil — 45 min — 20 min — 50 min — 1 h 25 — 45 min — 25 min — 2 h 20 — Ask: reserved, shared or charged? — Quieter outside summer Albufeira — Centre — Nightlife, dining, big resort — 45 min — 35 min — 1 h — 1 h 35 — 55 min — 35 min — 2 h 20 — Ask: reserved, shared or charged? — No corroborated rating Vilamoura — Centre — Marina and golf, upscale — 40 min — 55 min — 1 h 20 — 1 h 55 — 1 h 15 — 55 min — 2 h 15 — Ask: reserved, shared or charged? — No corroborated rating Quarteira — Centre — Short airport transfer on the Loulé coast — 35 min — 50 min — 1 h 15 — 1 h 50 — 1 h 10 — 50 min — 2 h 10 — Ask: reserved, shared or charged? — No corroborated rating Faro — East — Regional capital, old town, airport — 15 min — 55 min — 1 h 20 — 1 h 55 — 1 h 15 — 50 min — 2 h 05 — Ask: reserved, shared or charged? — Strongest low-season option for restaurants and services Olhão — East — Working fishing port, Ria Formosa access — 25 min — 1 h 05 — 1 h 30 — 2 h 05 — 1 h 25 — 1 h 05 — 2 h — Ask: reserved, shared or charged? — No corroborated rating Tavira — East — Elegant, calm historic town — 45 min — 1 h 05 — 1 h 30 — 2 h 05 — 1 h 25 — 1 h 05 — 1 h 50 — Ask: reserved, shared or charged? — No corroborated rating Manta Rota — East — Flat beach base — 55 min — 1 h 15 — 1 h 40 — 2 h 15 — 1 h 35 — 1 h 15 — 1 h 40 — Ask: reserved, shared or charged? — Quiet Driving times from Valhalla/OpenStreetMap routing, October 2026 — usually within 20–25% of Google Maps. Allow extra time on the N125 and around Albufeira and Portimão in July–August. How the numbers are defined: Faro airport means the terminal and car return, not Faro city. Benagil means the Praia de Benagil parking, not the village. Cabo de São Vicente is a separate point from Sagres town. Times are rounded to the nearest 5 min and are planning figures, so check a live router on the day. Two notes on the table. First, the parking column says the same thing for most rows because we hold no verified district-level parking data outside Lagos; what it gives you is the question to ask. Second, "no corroborated rating" in the winter column means the sources we compared did not agree on that town, not that it is closed. Longest of the four key drives (airport, Benagil, Ponta da Piedade, Cabo de São Vicente), by base, shortest first: - Lagos: 1 h 10 (to the airport). - Praia da Luz: 1 h 15 (to the airport). - Alvor: 1 h 20 (to Cabo de São Vicente). - Carvoeiro and Armação de Pêra: 1 h 25 (to Cabo de São Vicente). - Ferragudo and Praia da Rocha: 1 h 30 (to Cabo de São Vicente). - Albufeira: 1 h 35 (to Cabo de São Vicente). - Sagres: 1 h 45 (to the airport). - Quarteira: 1 h 50 (to Cabo de São Vicente). - Vilamoura and Faro: 1 h 55 (to Cabo de São Vicente). - Olhão and Tavira: 2 h 05 (to Cabo de São Vicente). - Manta Rota: 2 h 15 (to Cabo de São Vicente). Across all four, Lagos has the shortest longest leg. Looking only at Ponta da Piedade and Cabo de São Vicente, Sagres and Praia da Luz top out at about 55 min and Lagos at 1 h. The airport and Benagil are where the centre pulls ahead. Three verdict cards West: Lagos (or Praia da Luz) - Pick if: your trip is built around Ponta da Piedade, Cabo de São Vicente and the western beaches. - Why: 15 min to Ponta da Piedade, 45 min to Benagil, 1 h to Cabo de São Vicente, and Silves is 40 min away. Praia da Luz is a quieter family version of the same position, 25 min from Ponta da Piedade. - Trade-off: Faro airport is 1 h 10 from Lagos and 1 h 15 from Praia da Luz, and Seville is 2 h 45 to 2 h 50. - Parking: do not drive into the walled old town; use the municipal car parks or book a property with confirmed parking. Centre: Armação de Pêra, Carvoeiro or Albufeira - Pick if: you land at Faro airport, want Benagil often and do not mind a longer day when you go west. - Why: Armação de Pêra is 45 min from the airport and 20 min from Benagil; Carvoeiro is 10 min from Benagil; Albufeira is 45 min from the airport and 35 min from Benagil, and is the big nightlife-and-dining resort. - Trade-off: Ponta da Piedade is 50 min to 1 h away and Cabo de São Vicente 1 h 25 to 1 h 35. - Parking: ask whether the space is reserved, shared or charged, and confirm it before you pay. East: Tavira (or Faro and Olhão) - Pick if: you want calm, a historic town, Ria Formosa and a shorter run to Seville. - Why: Tavira is 45 min from the airport and Seville is 1 h 50; Faro is 15 min from the airport and Olhão 25 min. - Trade-off: Benagil is 1 h 05 from Tavira, Ponta da Piedade 1 h 30 and Cabo de São Vicente 2 h 05, so the western sights become full excursions. - Parking: ask each property whether a space is included; this matters more than the street address. Zone guide: what each base is like with a car Character notes below are editorial summaries, and winter notes are qualitative tiers, not measured visitor counts. West: Sagres, Lagos, Praia da Luz Sagres is windy, rugged and a surf base. Cabo de São Vicente is 10 min away and Ponta da Piedade 55 min, while the airport is 1 h 45 and Benagil 1 h 20. That is the trade-off: the far west on your doorstep, the airport and the central coast a long drive away. Winter is very quiet. Ask each property how parking works. Lagos is the most complete first base for a first visit: a walkable centre with historic walls, restaurants and boat trips, and wide amenities. Meia Praia is the long beach with larger apartment and resort stock; Porto de Mós is quieter and more residential. A rental car from Lagos reaches Ponta da Piedade in 15 min, Silves in 40 min and Monchique in 55 min, which makes it the base we use as the reference point for this page (see day trips from Lagos). The weak point is the airport, 1 h 10 away. The old town is narrow and partly pedestrianised or resident-only, so park outside the walls and walk in. Details are in the section on parking below. Winter: we have no corroborated rating for Lagos itself, but Meia Praia and Porto de Mós are quiet. Praia da Luz is a compact family resort 25 min from Ponta da Piedade and 55 min from Cabo de São Vicente. The airport is 1 h 15. Winter is quiet. Centre: Alvor, Praia da Rocha and Portimão, Ferragudo, Carvoeiro, Armação de Pêra, Albufeira, Vilamoura and Quarteira The centre is a strong answer to "airport plus Benagil": from Armação de Pêra or Albufeira the airport is 45 min away and Benagil 20 to 35 min; from Carvoeiro, Benagil is 10 min and the airport 55 min. In July and August, allow extra time around Albufeira and Portimão. Alvor is a former fishing village with a long beach and a lagoon. It is 1 h from the airport, 35 min from Benagil and 45 min from Ponta da Piedade, which puts its longest of the four key drives (Cabo de São Vicente, 1 h 20) third-shortest after Lagos and Praia da Luz. Winter is seasonal and quiet. Praia da Rocha and Portimão are two different experiences: Portimão is a working town that stays open year-round, and Praia da Rocha is the beach-resort district. Premium beachfront there is priced like Lagos and Albufeira, while Portimão itself can be cheaper than other big seaside resorts. Benagil is 35 min and the airport 1 h 05. Ferragudo is a small fishing village, 25 min from Benagil and 30 min from Silves. It is a quiet winter base. Carvoeiro is a cliffside cove resort, 10 min from Benagil. That makes it the base to pick if Benagil is the point of the holiday. It is quiet in winter, with many seasonal closures from November to March, so it is not a lively winter choice. Armação de Pêra balances the airport (45 min) and Benagil (20 min) well, and Silves is 25 min away. It is quieter outside summer. Albufeira is the big nightlife-and-dining resort: hilly and touristy. Airport 45 min, Benagil 35 min, Ponta da Piedade 1 h, Cabo de São Vicente 1 h 35. Vilamoura and Quarteira sit in the Loulé municipality. Vilamoura is a marina-and-golf base with an upscale feel; Quarteira is 35 min from the airport. Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago, also in Loulé, are the luxury and golf end of the Algarve. From here, Benagil is 50 to 55 min and Ponta da Piedade 1 h 15 to 1 h 20. East: Faro, Olhão, Tavira, Manta Rota Faro is the regional capital with an old town and the airport, 15 min away. It is the strongest low-season option for restaurants and services. Benagil is 55 min and Ponta da Piedade 1 h 20. Olhão is a working fishing port with access to the Ria Formosa lagoon, 25 min from the airport. Tavira is elegant and calm, and generally cheaper to stay in than Lagos, Albufeira or Vilamoura. Seville is 1 h 50 away, Silves 1 h 05. It is the east base to choose for slow days, not for Sagres. Manta Rota is a flat beach base and, with Cacela Velha, quiet in winter. It is the closest base to Seville on our list (1 h 40) and the furthest from Cabo de São Vicente (2 h 15). Two bases instead of one. The best contrasting combination is Lagos in the west plus Tavira in the east: cliffs, Sagres, Ponta da Piedade and Benagil on one side, Ria Formosa, island beaches and a calmer town on the other. The cost is repacking, a second check-in and a second parking arrangement. If your stay is short, one base avoids that cost. Driving between bases: the A22 and the N125 The A22 (Via do Infante) has been toll-free since 1 January 2025. Infraestruturas de Portugal, the road manager, has said no toll is charged on its full length. Old toll budgets and older guides are obsolete. You do not need a Via Verde transponder for the A22 itself. Check your rental contract at pick-up for any separate device or service fee, and do not buy a toll service just for a Lagos to Faro transfer. Not every Portuguese motorway is free. If your trip leaves the Algarve, for example on the A2 from Lisbon, a transponder may matter, so judge it against the whole itinerary. The N125 is the free local road that runs parallel to the A22. It is slower and passes through towns, which makes it better for local exploring than for transfers. Allow extra time on it, and around Albufeira and Portimão, in July–August. If you add Seville, ask the rental company before you book whether you may take the car into Spain, whether there is a cross-border charge and where roadside assistance applies. Seville is 1 h 40 from Manta Rota and 1 h 50 from Tavira, but 2 h 45 from Lagos. For a longer look at what the roads are like, see driving in Lagos. For the Faro airport pick-up side of the trip, see Lagos airport car rental. Parking at your accommodation Parking is part of the price. "Parking nearby" is not an assigned space, so ask whether it is reserved, shared, first-come or charged, and compare the room cost plus a usable parking arrangement. Prefer a property with confirmed parking over a picturesque historic-centre address. In Lagos, the walled old town is narrow and partly pedestrianised or resident-only. Ask your host for the exact vehicle entrance, unloading point and overnight parking. Some guides also report that satnav can lead into lanes too narrow for a car, so route to a car park on the edge of the old town and walk in. The municipal company Lagos em Forma says the town built two covered municipal car parks, Anel Verde/Praça D'Armas and Frente Ribeirinha, and added more paid on-street spaces. We publish no prices here; tariffs and walking routes are on our Lagos parking page. Costs the online price may not show Several Algarve municipalities, for example Albufeira, Portimão and Loulé, charge a per-night municipal tourist tax, collected by the property. The rules differ from one municipality to another, and they can change, so check the booking total and confirm with the property. Do not assume one town's rule applies in the next town along the coast. Two other costs are easy to miss. Parking at the property may be charged separately. And a second base means a second check-in and, with it, a second parking arrangement. On price direction only: the east, Tavira in particular, is generally cheaper than the west and than Albufeira and Vilamoura. Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago are the luxury end, and Vilamoura is an upscale marina and golf product. "East is cheaper" is a starting hypothesis, not a rule. Property type, beachfront and pool matter as much as the town, so check live prices for your dates using the links above. When to book For July and August, book well ahead. The real risk is availability, especially of properties with parking, rather than price. Shoulder months, April to May and October, and winter are cheaper than July and August, and flexibility on season is a stronger way to save than any "best booking day". There is no proven lowest-price booking window, so be wary of guides that give one. If you are searching for a cheap break, flexibility on dates is a stronger lever than a claimed booking day. Once your base is fixed, sort the car hire. You will know where to collect and where to park, and you can compare car rental options against the pick-up point you chose. FAQ Where is the best place to stay in the Algarve if you rent a car? Lagos is the best single base for a first trip focused on Ponta da Piedade, Cabo de São Vicente, Benagil and the western beaches, because its longest key drive is 1 h 10. For a trip that starts and ends at Faro airport with plenty of Benagil, Armação de Pêra or Albufeira work better, at 45 min from the airport. How long does it take to drive from Faro airport to Lagos? About 1 h 10 without traffic. That is the modelled time for the terminal to a central point in Lagos; allow more in July and August. From Faro airport, Albufeira is 45 min and Tavira 45 min. Is Lagos or Albufeira better with a rental car? Lagos is better for the west and Albufeira is better for the airport. Lagos to Ponta da Piedade is 15 min against 1 h from Albufeira. Albufeira to Faro airport is 45 min against 1 h 10 from Lagos. Benagil is 45 min from Lagos and 35 min from Albufeira. How far is Benagil from the main bases? Carvoeiro is 10 min away, Armação de Pêra 20 min, Ferragudo 25 min, Alvor, Praia da Rocha and Albufeira 35 min, Lagos 45 min, Faro 55 min and Tavira 1 h 05. These are drives to the Praia de Benagil parking. Is the A22 toll-free, and do I need a transponder? Yes, the A22 has been toll-free since 1 January 2025, and you do not need a transponder for it. Check your rental contract for any separate device fee. Other Portuguese motorways are tolled, so a transponder can matter if your itinerary leaves the Algarve. Is it worth staying in the east and driving west? Yes, if calm and a short airport transfer matter more to you than Sagres, Ponta da Piedade and Benagil. From Tavira, Ponta da Piedade is 1 h 30 and Cabo de São Vicente 2 h 05 each way. If those sights matter, stay in Lagos for part of the trip. Can I drive from the Algarve to Seville? Yes, but the east is far easier. Seville is 1 h 40 from Manta Rota, 1 h 50 from Tavira and 2 h 45 from Lagos. Ask the rental company about Spain before you book. Which Algarve towns are best in winter? Faro is the strongest low-season option, and Portimão is a practical working town that stays open year-round. Sagres is very quiet, and Praia da Luz, Ferragudo, Alvor and Manta Rota are quiet. Carvoeiro has many seasonal closures from November to March. This is an editorial assessment, not measured data. Where is cheap to stay in the Algarve? "Cheap" is relative, and we do not publish nightly prices. As a direction only, the east, Tavira in particular, is generally cheaper than Lagos, Albufeira and Vilamoura, but that is a starting point, not a rule. Property type, beachfront and pool matter as much as the town, so compare live prices for your dates. Is there a tourist tax in the Algarve? Several municipalities, including Albufeira, Portimão and Loulé, charge a per-night municipal tourist tax, collected by the property. Rules differ by municipality, so check the booking total before you pay. Where do I park in Lagos old town? Outside it. Use one of the two covered municipal car parks, Anel Verde/Praça D'Armas or Frente Ribeirinha, or a paid on-street zone, and walk in. Ask the host about unloading and overnight parking. See our Lagos parking page for the details.
